The ICE Themes series showcases cutting edge research and practical guidance in all branches of civil engineering. Each title focuses on a key issue or challenge in civil engineering, and includes research from the industry’s finest thinkers and influencers published through the ICE Publishing programme. Themes in the series include climate change resilience, advances in construction management, developments in renewable energy, and innovations in construction materials plus many more.

Flood Resilience (ICE Themes) provides an overview of research and latest developments in the field of flood management. The book collates innovative ideas, methodologies and practical approaches which address engineering challenges during various stages of flooding, from assessment of vulnerability, implementation of protective measures, through to management of extreme events in order to promote faster recovery after a flood. It also seeks to highlight the benefit of working collaboratively with a variety of partners, and engagement with the public.

This book has been created from recent research published by ICE Publishing and aims to provide readers with an overall view of the areas where flood resilience approaches are relevant, as well as a snapshot of the advances in research and practice.

Flood Resilience (ICE Themes) includes chapters on:

•    making urban flood resilience more operational
•    enhancing urban flood resilience at planning and practical levels
•    methods of assessing flood resilience of critical buildings
•     and sustainable drainage systems.

This book is a useful resource for engineers and academics seeking the latest research in the field of flood resilience.

Book Review

"This book is an interesting collection of papers on the theme of flood resilience. It is clearly and intelligently divided into sections of interest, and the papers are drawn from international experience. The breadth of experience makes it particularly useful, with synergies and transferable ideas ever present. While many of the solutions appear to be simple, they are all technically nuanced.

In particular the papers help readers to understand the performance of existing drainage as well as the strategic and detailed approaches to managing it. Practical examples are also given of successfully involving communities in solutions, which will help stakeholders understand how their actions or inactions can alter the performance of a chosen solution.

Considering today’s world of continuing urban development with increasing flood risk, this is a timely and useful publication. I found it thought provoking and readable."
